Start with one real task
Bring one task from this week
Choose something you already understand: a briefing, proposal, workshop plan, meeting pack, or difficult email. Use a non-confidential copy.
You do not need to understand AI first. You need to decide what kind of help would make this task better.
I see capable people open ChatGPT, type five words, and judge the result in fifteen seconds. When it guesses well, it feels magical. When it does not, they decide AI is useless.
Usually the problem is simpler: AI was never given a clear job.
I once ran an experiment — Ethnobot — interviewing a power-user CEO about how he actually works with AI. The line that stuck:
Synthesis isn't clustering sticky notes. It's managing multi-stakeholder power dynamics so the group keeps coherence. That's the art of the profession.
AI can summarise words. The work that changes outcomes often depends on context, relationships, timing, and judgement. Those remain mine.
I use chat to help me see, frame, draft, or challenge. I still make the decision and stand behind the result.
Craft calls this Assist: AI helps you think while you remain in charge.
The opening map names the other layers. This lesson only needs Chat. You do not need Cowork or Code yet.
| Kind of task | I must |
|---|---|
| Drafting | Edit for voice and fit |
| Evidence-led | Check load-bearing claims |
| Consequential | Human gate; high scrutiny |
The job is not “give me the answer so I can stop thinking.”
The job is to improve thinking I still own.
Your turn
This stays on your device. Craft does not save preview work, evidence, or a completion stamp.
One concrete task this week — e.g. “board update on X by Friday,” not “emails”.
Pick one: help me draft · challenge · make sense of something.
Framing, decision, voice, or the final call.
How you will know the chat helped.
# One real task Problem: … Chat's job (one line): … What stays mine: … What good looks like: …
Done when: You can name the help you want in one sentence and what decision remains yours.
